At the second conference for the National Reading Plan, the Education Minister, Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues, emphasised that the latest in computers for primary education, the Magalhães, could promote reading in the young, referring to two contents on the computer aimed at reading and writing: História do Dia (Story of the Day and Biblioteca dos Contos (The Library of Tales). With around five per cent of the Portuguese not reading books, newspapers or magazines, the Minister admitted that she was worried about “learning conditions for reading and writing in the first years.” Although she recognised this as “a problem we have not yet definitively resolved”, she did add that progress over the last 10 years was notable with the number of readers increasing by 58 per cent. With regards to the National Reading Plan, Rodrigues said that the objectives were being “surpassed”, but stressing that it was too soon to make an overall evaluation after only two years of a 10 year plan.
